Those who never picked up the books are now curious and reading them. I think it was my dad's as it is quite old. Tolkien's works to a wider audience, in that he succeeded. Putting the ridiculousness of “Tolkien can't actually write” and “a stillborn postscript” aside, there is some truth to the difficulty of reading The Silmarillion. That is why I finally got around to reading this book. I have to agree, I'm afraid, with Chad and Tolkien. Tolkien book, "TheTolkien Reader," published by Ballantine Paperbacks. In fact, it bordered on near fanaticism and readers came very close to never hearing of Bilbo, Frodo, Aragorn, or Gandalf at all. This volume includes commentary by Peter S. I remember reading books with ads in them. -Ballentine (1976) Tolkien Books have information about ordering other Tolkien books. Tolkien's dedication went much further than language and world building though. Not to dismiss your view Aidan, but as an adult watching the films, after reading the books as a YA, I found them lacking the depth of the books. I was very happy to run across this book at one of my local thrift stores.
